TCR05: Tosh & Lauder Race Days

The TCR05: Tosh & Lauder blog will be devoted to following Ian Tosh and Neil Lauder as they prepare and participate in the Transcontinental Race an annual, self-supported, ultra-distance cycling race across Europe.

1st June marks a big training block for both riders who have agreed to get in some good 3/4 day endurance blocks with perhaps a little trip to either Scotland or across to the start of the Tour de France in Germany...on the bikes of course.

This week Ian has been recovering from a slight cold.  Neverless he entered a local road race and backed it up with 5 and a half hour ride the following day with some local riders who arranged to meet at 6am for a leisurely stroll. An early start allowed Ian to exploit the reflective nature of the pactimo bib shorts he has been using on longer (4hr+) rides with no issues and good comments from other riders.

Neil was invited by PMR@Toachim House (his race team) to be a ride captain for the Myeloma London to Paris charity ride which took place 25-29th May. The 500km event which started in Greenwich Park heading out via Swanley then on to Folkestone before taking the train to Calais and then heading South East down to Paris. His role along with 7 other PMR riders was to look after and keep safe approximately 140 riders which included giving many of them a gentle push where needed, when they found it tough.
The group of cyclists ranged from some that had never been on a bike to others that had raced back in their youth, patients with Cancer to employees of the research and drug companies.

Although the distance wasn't huge for Neil, it was a good chance to get a feel of a few back-to-back days in the saddle and in the very hot weather they were luckily enough to have.

Neil said "I urge anyone to jump on a bike and give something like this a go, It's a great experience meeting all the different riders, hearing their stories whilst raising a huge amount of money and awareness".

Neil also had the pleasure of riding along side Mark Beaumont who took a day out from his busy training schedule and joint the riders on Day1, sharing stories on his up and coming challenge as well as the TCR.

Not for the faint of heart

TCR05 with Tosh & Lauder

This year's race, the TCR No. 5, begins at 10 p.m. on Friday, July 28, 2017 at Geraardsbergen in Belgium and concludes in Meteora in central Greece.

At the start will be two mates who met through bike racing in their local county, Ian Tosh and Neil Lauder. Both are Category 2 riders who have participated in local, national and international races, such as the Belgian Kermesse, who feel the time is right "to escape into the unknown and race across Europe before our kids get too old and our partners change their minds!"

The last few weeks of training for both Ian and Neil have been a bit of hit and miss. The quality and quantity has been there but the management of sleep and sleep deprivation is somewhat a new skill to overcome.

Every day is a school day; preparation and planning is key.

The plan was to simply catch up one morning this weekend to try out a few things, such as our civvies, our new Pactimo kit and my jetboil that has been sitting in the garage unused for the last 3 years.
